Games for Learning Economics Website

I stumbled upon this site via Greg Mankiw’s Blog and thought it would be useful share.  Filled with economic games for the classroom designed to teach economic principles, I’m sure there is much we could mine.  Top 5 most popular games currently are:

  • Free Entry Free Exit Farm Game
  • Public Good Game
  • Widget Game
  • Oligopoly Game
  • Five Firms Oligopoly Game

Other recently added ones seem quite relevant to Conquest, too.  Inflation Game, Official and Parallel Market Exchange Rates Game, Exchange Rates and Purchasing Power Parity Game, and my favorite, Currency Attack Game.  Weren’t these mini-games in previous editions?

Pointed Questions

As promised, I’ve come up with a few pointed questions to try and focus up the opening thinking. In your opinion:

  • What’s missing from Modern Conquest?
  • How should the Modern Conquest handle unit HP, attack roll, bonus against other units and cost? Remember: the goal is to simplify the system as much as possible.
  • Is 16 players too many?

What exactly are GMs responsible for?

  • Receiving and computing orders
  • Sending back to users the results of turns
  • Writing the World Times

What else?

Opening thinking

I’ve started to think about games we could run first at ConquestGames.Net. We’ve always had grand visions of building out web applications that help you run your country. In fact, previous versions of Conquest featured such a Country Management System or CMS. However, with our busy lives it makes sense to return to the basic play by email or PBEM system. A simple game, with 5-15 players and more than one Game Master just makes sense. Who knows when we’ll have time to code the CMS of our dreams?

So far, I’ve thought out two game ideas: Modern Conquest and Revolution. Both are PBEM games, and both are meant to simplify the grand game world that we’ve previous build out. Again, I’m starting small.

  • Modern Conquest is a 16 player world map. Players start with 3 provinces, and can expand and take over nearby territories or independent provinces. The goal of this game is simple: global domination. In this respect it is similar to the old Conquest games that we’ve played and loved. There are fewer units than the previous old Conquest, no espionage and a free for all diplomacy. Click here to learn more about Modern Conquest.
  • Revolution PBEM is an 8 player version of a yet un-played game about the Mexican civil war. I worked on a version of this game with Nick Moore, but unfortunately we didn’t get far enough into programming to get the full game up and running. The goal of Revolution is to amass enough territory and electoral votes to secure the presidency of Mexico. Revolution is a stripped down version of previous games of Conquest, but with a political layer and more built in role playing possibilities. Click here to learn more about Revolution PBEM.

At this point I have no idea if we’ll do these ideas, but this is what I’ve come up with so far. Thoughts?

The plan… if there is one

So the plan so far with Conquest Games is to get a few key site resources up and running before we delve into a game. In fact, I’m not even sure what game we’ll be running. Theaters of War? Revolution? Galactic Conquest? We’ll see soon hopefully, but for now we’ll be getting the follow resources going:

Anything we’re missing?

We’re back!

We’re back online here at The War Room, the official blog of ConquestGames.net. Most of the players don’t know we’ve started back up, but we’ll take the next few weeks to get moving on the basics, with a new Conquest games coming hopefully toward the end of 2010 or sometime in 2011. Stay tuned!
